Canter for the Cause Returns to Pimlico Sunday, June 2

Entry Deadline Tuesday, May 28 for Annual Event to Benefit TAA

BALTIMORE – Pimlico Race Course will once again serve as host for the annual Canter for the Cause, sponsored by the Maryland Jockey Club and The Equiery, to benefit the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Sunday, June 2.

Friday’s Stronach 5: Five Races, Four Tracks, Three on the Turf

Free Past Performances, $100,000 Guaranteed Pool

LAUREL, MD – Friday’s Stronach 5, featuring an industry-low 12-percent takeout and $100,000 guaranteed pool, will be highlighted by turf races from Gulfstream Park, Pimlico Race Course and Santa Anita Park.

Post time for the national pick 5 will be 5 p.m.  The Stronach 5 will also feature six furlong events on the main track from Golden Gate Fields and Gulfstream.

Brad Cox Earns Richest Preakness Weekend Trainer Bonus

BALTIMORE – Brad Cox edged Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen to claim the top prize in the Maryland Jockey Club’s $100,000 bonus program offered to trainers for their participation in stakes races over Preakness weekend at Pimlico Race Course.

Cox led the way with 36 points, three more than two-time defending champion Asmussen, to earn a $50,000 bonus. In his Triple Crown race debut, Cox ran third and fourth, respectively, with Owendale and Warrior’s Charge in the 144th Preakness Stakes (G1) May 18, won by War of Will.

BALTIMORE — Gary Barber’s War of Will exited his 1 ¼-length victory over the late-running Everfast in Saturday’s144th Preakness Stakes (G1) at Pimlico Race Course in good order and will run in the Belmont Stakes (G1) June 8 at Belmont Park if the colt continues to show all the right signs, trainer Mark Casse said Sunday morning.

Preakness 144 Sets Total Handle Record of $99.852 Million

BALTIMORE – The 144th running of the Preakness Stakes (G1) set an all-time total handle record Saturday of $99,852,653.

Saturday’s record handle topped the previous mark of $97,168,658 set in 2017. Attendance was 131,256.

BALTIMORE – Calumet Farm homebred Lexitonian split horses in mid-stretch and came with a determined run to edge past Gladiator King at the wire and upset the $200,000 Chick Lang (G3) at odds of 17-1 Saturday at Pimlico Race Course.

Mitchell Road Shows the Way in Stella Artois Gallorette

BALTIMORE – Mrs. J.V. Shields and E.J.M. McFadden Jr.’s Mitchell Road, a half-sister to 2019 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Country House, extended her win streak to four races with a front-running 2 ¼-length score in Saturday’s $150,000 Stella Artois Gallorette (G3) at Pimlico Race Course.

The 68th running of the 1 1/16-mile Gallorette for fillies and mares on the grass was the sixth of nine stakes, five graded, on a 14-race program highlighted by the 144th Preakness Stakes (G1), the Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown.

Wild About Star Shines in The Very One Victory

BALTIMORE – Brittlyn Stable’s Wild About Star, racing for the first time outside of her native Louisiana, came with a sweeping move on the outside and stormed down the center of the track to pass favored Jo Jo Air to win Saturday’s $100,000 The Very One at Pimlico Race Course.

The 20th running of the five-furlong The Very One for fillies and mares on the grass was among nine stakes, five graded, worth $2.8 million on a 14-race program highlighted by the 144th Preakness Stakes (G1), the Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown.
