Everfast Joins 144th Preakness Stakes Field

BALTIMORE, MD — Calumet Farm’s Everfast became a last-minute addition to Saturday’s 144th Preakness Stakes (G1) at Pimlico Race Course, bringing the field for the Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown to 13 horses. Joel Rosario, winner of the 2013 Kentucky Derby (G1) on Orb and the 2014 Belmont Stakes (G1) on Tonalist, has the mount.

“It’s a wide-open field, take a shot,” trainer Dale Romans said by phone from Louisville.

Romans saddled Shackleford for a triumph in the 2011 Preakness Stakes.

BALTIMORE – The Maryland Jockey Club for the third straight year is offering $100,000 in points-based bonus money to the trainers who run at least five horses in stakes over Preakness weekend. The winner of the $50,000 top prize the past two years was Steve Asmussen, who won four stakes in 2018 while accruing 82 points and two in 2017 while racking up 38 points.

Motion Back to Defend Pimlico Special Title with Flying the Flag

BALTIMORE – A year after winning the historic $300,000 Pimlico Special (G3) for the first time with multiple graded-stakes winning millionaire Irish War Cry, trainer Graham Motion plans to defend his title with a lightly raced horse making his stakes debut.

West Point Thoroughbreds and Chester Thoroughbreds’ Flying the Flag will represent Motion in the Pimlico Special, extended this year for the first time from 1 3/16 miles – the same distance as the Preakness Stakes (G1) – to 1 ¼ miles.

BALTIMORE, MD – Gary Barber’s War of Will was the first contender for Saturday’s $1.65 million Preakness Stakes (G1) to arrive at Pimlico Race Course, stepping onto the grounds early Tuesday morning following a van ride that originated at Churchill Downs Monday afternoon.
