Mitchell Road Shows the Way in Stella Artois Gallorette
BALTIMORE – Mrs. J.V. Shields and E.J.M. McFadden Jr.’s Mitchell Road, a half-sister to 2019 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Country House, extended her win streak to four races with a front-running 2 ¼-length score in Saturday’s $150,000 Stella Artois Gallorette (G3) at Pimlico Race Course.
The 68th running of the 1 1/16-mile Gallorette for fillies and mares on the grass was the sixth of nine stakes, five graded, on a 14-race program highlighted by the 144th Preakness Stakes (G1), the Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown.
Ridden by Joel Rosario for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott, Mitchell Road ($6.20) hit the wire in 1:41.21 over a firm turf course to earn her second straight stakes win following the Albert M. Stall Memorial Feb. 16 at Fair Grounds last time out.
Mitchell Road has now run first or second in all seven of her races, five of them wins. After shaking off 19-1 long shot Dynatail, who stalked her through fractions of 23.28 and 47.07 seconds, Mitchell Road straightened for home in command and had plenty left to turn away a late bid from multiple graded-stakes winner Thewayiam, who held off Viva Vegas by a half-length for second. Irish Group 3 winner I’m So Fancy, making her North American debut, was fourth.
Gallorette retired in 1986 as the world’s leading money-winning mare, with earnings of $445,535. She won 21 of 72 starts and placed in 39 stakes, capturing the 1945 Pimlico Oaks and being named champion handicap mare of 1946. She was elected to the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame in 1962.
$150,000 Stella Artois Gallorette (G3) Stakes Quotes
Riley Mott (Assistant to winning trainer Bill Mott, Mitchell Road): “She’s developed with age into a very nice filly. She showed talent from Day 1. She’s never been out of the exacta and she’s developed into a very nice filly. She got a little bit sick after her race at the Fair Grounds, and needed a little time to recuperate, which is why you’re only seeing her now at Pimlico. She always trains very forwardly, very willingly and she surely ran well today. There’s a big race at Belmont going one turn on Belmont Day [Longines Just a Game (G1)] which I would say would suit her style, but obviously we have to see how she comes out of this and talk to the ownership. We’ll enjoy this; she gave her little brother [Country House] a big update there.”
Joel Rosario (Winning jockey, Mitchell Road): “She broke away in the lead and was just looking around, enjoying what she was doing. She is a good-moving filly, and I'm glad I had the opportunity to ride her. She was comfortable. [In the stretch], I just wanted to ride her just in case some other horse might come up on her."
