BALTIMORE – Building on the momentum of a weekend witnessed by more than 180,000 fans on-track and where total handle surpassed $112 million, live racing returns to legendary Pimlico Race Course Thursday with a nine-race program that features a 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot carryover of $216,236.59.
The popular multi-race wager went unsolved on both the May 18 Black-Eyed Susan Day program, which attracted a crowd of 48,265 and saw total handle reach $18.591 million, and May 19, when Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Justify captured the 143rd running of the Preakness Stakes (G1) before 134,487 fans – the third-largest gathering in race history – and helped generate of total handle of $93.655 million.
A total of $583,950 was wagered into the Rainbow 6 on Preakness Day, an all-stakes sequence that saw no payoff higher than Switzerland’s $7.80 in winning the Maryland Sprint (G3). Justify, favored at 2-5 in a field of eight 3-year-olds, returned $2.80 in the final leg, with multiple winning tickets returning $41.04.
Maryland’s state-record Pick 6 carryover is $345,898.33, reached heading into the April 15 program at Laurel Park. It was solved that day by a single bettor for a jackpot payout of $399,545.94.
The previous state record of $275,322 came June 6, 2015 on closing day of Pimlico’s spring meet, when a mandatory payout produced multiple winning tickets worth $12,518.28.
Thursday’s Rainbow 6 begins in Race 4 and includes turf events in Races 5 and 9 which attracted a total of 30 entries, an average of 15 starters per race. The featured Race 8 is a $45,000 second-level optional claiming allowance for fillies and mares 3 and up going six furlongs on the main track, where Everlasting Secret – fifth as a 42-1 long shot in the Primonetta Stakes April 21 in her last start – is the tepid 4-1 program favorite in a field of eight.
The carryover jackpot is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 60 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners while 40 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.
