He Hate Me Overcomes Greenness to Capture Career Debut
Jockey Karamanos Closing in on 2,000 Career Victories
BALTIMORE – As part of a special Memorial Day holiday program, historic Pimlico Race Course will offer mandatory payouts in the 20-cent Rainbow 6, 50-cent Late Pick 5 and $1 Super Hi-5 wagers on closing day of the Preakness Meet at Pimlico, Monday May 29.
Following the conclusion of Pimlico’s 12-day stand, live racing shifts to Laurel Park for its summer meet that runs Friday, June 9 through Sunday, Aug. 20. Latin American Racing Channel simulcast wagering will be available during at Laurel during the break between meets.
The Rainbow 6 jackpot is paid out only when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 60 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool. However, on days when a mandatory payout is scheduled the entire pool is shared by those holding tickets with the most winners.
He Hate Me Overcomes Greenness to Capture Career Debut
Sagamore Farm’s He Hate Me overcame a slow start and his own inexperience to make a sweeping move on the far turn and go on to capture his career debut by 1 ¾ lengths in Friday’s fifth race.
The 2-5 favorite in a field of six for the $40,000 maiden special weight, He Hate Me ($2.80) ran 4 ½ furlongs in 52.34 seconds over a fast main track under jockey Horacio Karamanos.
It was the second win of the day and 1,994th of his career for Karamanos, who was also first with Cort’n Asong ($7) in the third race.
Shape of You broke running and opened a clear lead after going the opening quarter-mile in 22.72 seconds and the half in 46.09. He Hate Me, who attempted to buck Karamanos off his back during the post parade, gathered himself following the tardy start and gained momentum on the far outside to coast by the pacesetter and win going away. Dirtyfoot rallied to get second over Shape of You.
“Today he made me work. I think with a first-time starter, you never know,” Karamanos said. “He broke a little slow out of the gate and then he picked it up. He was leaning out, leaning in a little bit. At the quarter pole he got in the bit nicely and I knew I had it because at the top of the stretch he gave me a kick and he went easy by [Shape of You]. He was so green, he needed the race.”
He Hate Me’s win came nearly a year after another son of Alogrithms, Sagamore’s multiple stakes winner Recruiting Ready, debuted with a 10 ¾-length romp at Pimlico.
“Recruiting Ready didn’t buck or try to dump the jock in the post parade and he was really classy and broke sharp and went to the lead. This horse put a good effort in. He was his own worst enemy probably in the race. He had to overcome himself and was able to get the win so you have to give him some credit for that,” trainer Horacio DePaz said. “I didn’t think he would not break. He was really acting a little immature out there but the race will do him a lot of good. He’ll get a lot of experience out of it, so he’ll be fine.”
Notes: Trainer Mike Trombetta sent out a pair of winners Friday with Disco Express ($14.40) in the first race and Chilly Magician ($13.80) in the fourth. … Needing six wins to reach 2,000 for his career, Karamanos is named in nine of 10 races Saturday and seven of 10 races Sunday.
