Preakness Candidate Goldencents Starts Journey To Pimlico

Santa Anita Derby Winner Likely To Arrive in Baltimore Around Midnight

BALTIMORE, 05-06-13---Goldencents, a contender for the Preakness Stakes (G1) on May 18, began his journey to Pimlico Race Course Monday afternoon at 3:17 when he boarded an airport-bound van at Churchill Downs. The Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner, who finished a disappointing 17th in Saturday’s Kentucky Derby (G1), was scheduled to fly from Louisville to New York before vanning to Pimlico Monday evening.

Goldencents’ trainer, Doug O’Neill, will be seeking his second straight success in the Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown, having saddled Kentucky Derby winner I’ll Have Another to a stirring triumph over Bodemeister in the 1 3/16-mile classic last year.

Assistant trainer Jack Sisterson will be overseeing the barn for Team O’Neill until the conditioner arrives from California. Sisterson is driving to Baltimore from Louisville and is expected to be at Pimlico around 5 p.m. He said the flight to New York is scheduled to land at 6:30 p.m. Eastern, meaning Goldencents will likely arrive at Pimlico around midnight.

Normandy Invasion, the fourth-place Kentucky Derby finisher, accompanied Goldencents on the van and flight to New York. Trainer Chad Brown earlier in the day reported that a start in the Preakness is under consideration since the son of Tapit came out of his strong Derby effort in good order.
