Pimlico Fall Meet Continues with Live Nine-Race Card Friday
Carryovers in Rainbow 6, Super Hi-5; 10 Races on Tap Saturday
BALTIMORE – A maiden special weight for 2-year-olds sprinting six furlongs on the main track and carryovers in the 20-cent Rainbow 6 and $1 Super Hi-5 wagers are on tap as live racing returns to historic Pimlico Race Course Friday for the continuation of its nine-day fall meet.
Post time for the first of nine races is 12:40 p.m.
Nine juveniles are set to line up in featured Race 5 led by 5-2 program favorite Landon Jack, making his fourth career start out of a runner-up finish in a five-furlong maiden special weight Aug. 21 at Laurel Park for trainer John Salzman Jr., and 3-1 second choice Roan Burgundy, trained by Brittany Russell, who connects at 23 percent with first-time starters.
Also in the field is Alottacents, who finished first by a nose last out in a seven-furlong maiden special weight July 31 at Laurel but was disqualified and placed third behind General J R for interference.
The Rainbow 6 begins with a carryover of $6,422 in Race 4, a maiden claiming event for fillies and mares ages 3, 4 and 5 scheduled for five furlongs on the turf which drew an overflow field of 10. It is preceded by a six-furlong starter optional claimer for 3-year-olds and up that includes 2021 Miracle Wood winner Maythehorsebwithu and 2021 Maryland Million Starter Handicap winner No More Talk.
There will be a carryover of $1,157.67 in the Super Hi-5 for Friday’s opener, a maiden claimer for fillies and mares age 3, 4 and 5 sprinting six furlongs on the main track. Race 7 is a starter optional claimer for 3-year-olds and up going 1 1/16 miles featuring the stakes-placed Jamie Ness-trained entry of Wentz and Thorny Tale, who have combined for 19 career victories, and 2019 Maryland Juvenile Futurity winner Laddie Liam.
Juveniles will again be in the spotlight on Saturday’s 10-race program where 10 2-year-olds are entered in a five-furlong turf dash in Race 2 featuring five first-time starters including Barb’s Pride, a Maryland-bred son of Shaman Ghost trained by Dale Capuano for Steve Newby – the same connections that won the $75,000 Ben’s Cat and $100,000 Bald Eagle Derby on grass over successive weekends this summer at Laurel.
A second maiden special weight comes in Race 5 for horses age 3, 4 and 5 sprinting six furlongs on the main track. Russell-trained Eight and Sand, a 4-year-old son of Munnings, adds blinkers off a sixth-place finish in debut Aug. 10 at Colonial Downs. Racing for the first time will be Rennie, a Virginia homebred by Great Notion, and Chocolate Shake, a son of Twirling Candy that fetched $70,000 at the OBS winter mixed sale in January.
Race 8 is a five-furlong allowance for fillies and mares 3 and up scheduled for five furlongs on the grass featuring July 22 M. Tyson Gilpin winner Chambeau; 2021 All Brandy runner-up Awesome Jazz, who rallied for a neck triumph sprinting 5 ½ furlongs last out Aug 19; and Little Bit of That, returning to the turf after winning two of four starts on dirt.
A second allowance for fillies and mares 3 and up, this one going six furlongs on the main track, comes in Race 9 and includes Spicy Margarita, worse than third just once in seven career tries including two wins; eight-time winner Tweet Away Robin; and 3-year-old Bernardini filly Vibrant Judy, an impressive seven-length maiden special weight winner in debut Aug. 21 at Laurel.
Closing weekend of Pimlico’s fall meet Sept. 23-25 includes four $100,000 stakes – the Laurel Dash and Sensible Lady Turf Dash on grass, 1 1/16-mile Polynesian and six-furlong Weather Vane on dirt – Saturday, Sept. 24.
