Holy Boss Runs Win Streak to Three in Chick Lang
BALTIMORE, MD., 05/16/15 – After stalking pacesetter Victory Is Sweet for five furlongs, Jerry Durant’s Holy Boss surged to the lead in the final eighth of a mile and won the 16th running of the $100,000 Chick Lang by two lengths Saturday at Pimlico Race Course.
The six-furlong Chick Lang for sophomore sprinters was the third consecutive victory for Holy Boss ($11.40), a chestnut son of Street Boss who covered the distance in 1:09.61 on a fast main track.
Trained by Steve Asmussen, winner of the 2008 Chick Lang with Lantana Mob, Holy Boss improved his record to four wins and one second from seven lifetime starts. Victory Is Sweet was a clear second, four lengths ahead of 9-5 favorite Gimme Da Lute.
CHICK LANG STAKES QUOTES
Winning trainer Steve Asmussen (Holy Boss): “We got a great trip. He got away from the gate really cleanly. Ricky (Santana Jr.) put him in a great spot and he went very well from there. I was a little concerned when they said :44-and-change, but it’s a good group of horses and that’s what happens. This is another step up in competition for him to run so fast, and I think there will be some nice races in his future.”
Winning jockey Ricardo Santana Jr. (Holy Boss): “This is a nice horse. I had a lot of confidence in this horse. I had a good break and was in good position going into the turn. I knew that [Victory is Sweet] was pretty quick so we just sat behind waiting to make a move. When I asked for run, I had a lot of horse in my hands. Turning for home I felt pretty good.”
