Triple Carryovers for Sunday’s Eight-Race Program
Father’s Day Brunch From 1-5 p.m. Sunday
BALTIMORE – For the first time since finishing eighth in last year’s Preakness Stakes (G1), Bodhisattva makes his return to Maryland in a $47,000 optional claiming allowance for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/16 miles that serves as the feature of Sunday’s eight-race, Father’s Day program at historic Pimlico Race Course.
Owned and trained by Laurel Park-based Jose Corrales, Bodhisattva is winless in seven starts since his primarily front-running 1 ½-length victory in the 1 1/16-mile Federico Tesio four weeks prior to the Preakness, where he was a brief factor before being eased behind Triple Crown champion American Pharoah.
Following that effort, the 4-year-old Student Council colt was off the board in a trio of stakes including the Pegasus (G3) and Canadian Derby (G3), then moved to trainer Doug O’Neill’s barn in California over the winter. Winless in three starts, most recently May 19 at Santa Anita, he returned to Corrales last month and has been training steadily for his return.
“I’ve had him for over a month. He’s doing very well. I think that they did a very good job with the horse over there after he came out of the layoff,” Corrales said. “I just think maybe he likes Maryland and I hope he does well. He’s training very good and I expect that we’ll have a good result with him tomorrow.”
Listed at 15-1 on the morning line, Bodhisattva will be ridden by Taylor Hole from post 5 in an eight-horse field topped by 9-5 program favorite Mr Palmer, the 2015 Claiming Crown Jewel runner-up who exits a victory in the one-mile More To Tell Stakes April 2 at Aqueduct.
“I expect that maybe we can bring him all the way from the back and make one run and see what happens. He made a very good run at Santa Anita first time out and I thought, ‘Wow, we’ve got the horse back real good,’ but after the other two races he didn’t like it,” Corrales said. “I think he’s going to be good.”
Including Pimlico, Laurel and Timonium, Bodhisattva has made nine career starts in Maryland with three wins, one second and two thirds. In 2014 he broke his maiden and won an optional claiming allowance at Laurel, and returned in 2015 to run second in the Private Terms Stakes prior to his Tesio victory.
“Everybody’s very happy that he’s come back,” Corrales said. “It’s good to see him back and, myself, I like the horse. He’s the horse that brought me to the biggest races of my life.”
Leafy Shade Uses Inside Trip to Capture Saturday Feature
Gregory S. Bentley’s Leafy Shade ($6.80) rated near the back of the pack before finding room inside and scooting up the rail under Trevor McCarthy to win Saturday’s eighth-race feature, a $42,000 allowance for females 3 and up going 1 1/16 miles on the grass.
Multiple stakes-placed in Ireland, Leafy Shade was making her second start in the U.S. for trainer Edward Graham. The 3-year-old Irish-bred took the lead from Freudie Anne nearing the finish and turned back a bid from the multiple stakes winner to hit the wire in 1:40.84 over a firm turf course.
Freudie Anne, the 6-5 favorite in a field of eight, held on for second ahead of 35-1 long shot Give Us A Reason.
Voluntario, Lovable Lady Impressive in Allowance Wins
Luis Archilla’s Voluntario, coming off a runner-up finish to American Freedom in the Latin American Racing Channel Sir Barton May 21 on the Preakness undercard, cruised to a 5 ¾-length victory in Saturday’s opener, a $42,000 allowance on the main track.
Ridden by Victor Carrasco for trainer Rudy Rodriguez, the 3-year-old Hold Me Back colt contested the lead before taking over at the top of the stretch and drawing away to win in 1:45.32 for 1 1/16 miles. He paid $2.40 as the 1-5 favorite.
In the seventh race, a $47,000 third-level allowance, Lovable Lady ($8) took the lead in mid-stretch from 6-5 favorite Mom’z Laugh and held off a late run from another stakes winner, Lady Sebago, to win by 1 ½ lengths in 1:12.04 for six furlongs.
Triple Carryovers for Sunday’s Eight-Race Program
There will be carryovers in the 20-cent Rainbow 6, 50-cent Pick 5 and $1 Super Hi-5 wagers on Sunday.
First race post time is 1:10 p.m.
No one had all six winners in the Rainbow 6, pushing the carryover jackpot to $2,565.40, while tickets with five of six winners returned $182.30. The popular multi-race wager spans Races 3-8 on Sunday including the featured seventh race.
The Rainbow 6 carryover jackpot is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.
Also on Sunday, there will be a carryover of $5,194.06 in the Pick 5 (Races 4-8) and $539.58 in the Super Hi-5 for the first race. Tickets with four of five winners in Saturday’s Pick 5, which offers an industry-low 12 percent takeout, paid $25.05.
Father’s Day Brunch from 1-5 p.m. Sunday
In addition to the live race program, Pimlico will serve up a special Father’s Day brunch from 1-5 p.m. in the Terrace Dining Room.
Brunch includes appetizers, salads and dips; an omelet and waffle station with sides; seafood station; carving station; entrees of fried chicken, pork and salmon; and a dessert station.
Tickets are $28 per person and reservations are recommended by calling 301-725-0770. The Terrace Dining Room is located on the second floor clubhouse.
Note: Jockey Luis Garcia visited the winner’s circle twice Saturday, aboard Legendary King ($14.60) in the fourth race and Henry Hayes ($87.60) in the sixth. Trevor McCarthy also had a pair of victories with Proud Maid Marian ($5.60) in the second and Leafy Shade ($6.80) in the eighth.
