Attendance Record Set As American Pharoah Wins 140th Preakness
Total Handle of $85.161 Million Up From 2014
BALTIMORE, MD., 05/16/15 – A record crowd of 131,680 fans watched American Pharoah win the 140th Preakness Stakes Saturday afternoon at Pimlico Race Course setting the stage for him to try and become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978.
The record crowd surpassed the previous record set last year of 123,469.
Total handle on the day was $85.161 million, topping last year’s mark of $83.786 million.
“The day was spectacular,” said Maryland Jockey Club Vice President and General Manager Sal Sinatra. “It was a celebration by the City of Baltimore for the City of Baltimore, capped off by an incredible performance by American Pharoah. We wish the Zayat family, Bob Baffert, Victor Espinoza and their team a successful journey three weeks from today in the Belmont Stakes and we thank everyone who attended the 140th Preakness Stakes for making it one of the most memorable.”
