Not Your Average Joe in $100,000 Maryland Juvenile Championship

Luna Belle Wins Maryland Juvenile Fillies Championship

BALTIMORE – The Elkstone Group LLC’s homebred Joe, a 2-year-old son of Declaration of War, drove to the front down the stretch under jockey Victor Carrasco to win Saturday’s $100,000 Maryland Juvenile Championship.

After making his debut on turf Oct. 24, Joe broke his maiden Nov. 21 at a mile on the main track at Laurel by 3 ½ lengths. Carrasco, who has ridden Joe in each of his starts and works the horse, got the seven furlongs in 1:25.63.

Stronach 5 Returns $6,345

BALTIMORE – There were 14 winning tickets on Friday’s Stronach 5 with each returning $6,345.80.

The Stronach 5 featured races from Laurel Park and Gulfstream Park with a low 12-percent takeout.

LAUREL PARK TO REMAIN CLOSED FOR RACING

BALTIMORE (December 7, 2021) – The Maryland Jockey Club today announced that Laurel Park will remain closed for racing as work continues to complete renovation to the track. Live racing at Laurel Park was suspended on December 3rd.

Track renovation plans have been developed in collaboration with The Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association, the Maryland Jockey Club and industry experts with the goal of having the safest possible racing surface.

BALTIMORE – Journeyman Julian Pimentel, a Maryland mainstay since 2006 that will be forever linked as the regular rider of late Mid-Atlantic legend Ben’s Cat, is taking the winter off to contemplate his future.

Pimentel, 40, finished sixth aboard Norman Lewis’ 4-year-old filly Castilleja for Hall of Fame trainer King Leatherbury in Saturday’s opener at Laurel Park, a six-furlong starter-optional claimer for fillies and mares 3 and up.
