BALTIMORE, 05-17-13– Karl Watson, Michael E. Pegram & Paul Weitman’s Fiftyshadesofhay closed with a rush to claim a narrow victory in the 89th running of the $500,000 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (G2) at Pimlico Race Course.

Trained by Bob Baffert, the daughter of Pulpit rated off the pace under jockey Joel Rosario before launching an outside stretch run and reeling in Marathon Lady by a neck at the finish. Fiftyshadesofhay ran the 1 1/8-mile stakes for 3-year-old fillies in 1:52.73.  Toasting, who pressed the pace under Javier Castellano, finished third.

Ben’s Cat Rolls To Victory In Jim McKay Turf Sprint

BALTIMORE, 05-17-13–Winning his 16th stakes and 21st race overall, The Jim Stable’s Ben’s Cat charged by the front runners and won the $100,000 Jim McKay Turf Sprint. The King Leatherbury trainee also had captured the Jim McKay in 2011.

The 7-year-old son of Parker’s Storm Cat, who was bred by owner-trainer Leatherbury, completed the five furlong distance over the firm turf in 56.18 seconds and paid $4.20. Front runner Spring to the Sky held on to finish second, while co-favorite Bridgetown was third and longshot Super Chunky finished fourth.

I’m Mom’s Favorite Wins Thrilling Ms. Preakness Pink Warrior Stakes

BALTIMORE, 05-17-13---CJZ Racing Stable’s I’m Mom’s Favorite won a head-bob to take first money in the $100,000 Ms. Preakness Pink Warrior Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Pimlico Race Course.

 Reaching the lead in deep stretch under jockey Sheldon Russell, I’m Mom’s Favorite appeared to have the race in hand until longshot Flattering Bea came flying from far back to narrowly miss edging the 4-5 post-time favorite. I’m Mom’s Favorite’s margin of victory was just a nose. Behind Flattering Bea came Lighthouse Bay, with front runner Tread tiring to finish fourth.

BALTIMORE, 05-17-13---Nineteen years after her last victory and more than three decades after being the first female to capture a Grade 1 race, Mary Russ-Tortora was back in the winner’s circle on Friday afternoon.

With the 59-year-old Russ-Tortora at the controls, Haywired overcame an awkward start and held off a pair of late closers to win the $52,000 Lady Legends for the Cure IV presented by Wells Fargo at Pimlico Race Course.

Dance To Bristol Wins Handily In Skipat Stakes

BALTIMORE, 05-17-13---Copperville Farm’s Dance to Bristol tracked the speed through the far turn, then charged to the lead and won as her rider pleased in the $100,000 Skipat Stakes at Pimlico Race Course.

Six fillies and mares faced the starter in the six-furlong test contested over the fast main track. Dance to Bristol left the starting gate as the 3-5 post-time favorite under jockey Xavier Perez for trainer Ollie Figgins III. At the finish, Dance to Bristol was first, pacesetter Orange’s Lil Sis had finished second and Kalambaka Queen was third.

BALTIMORE, 05-17-13 – Stuart Janney III and Phipps Stable’s Orb galloped an energetic 1 ¼ miles at Pimlico Friday morning, letting exercise rider Jenn Patterson and trainer Shug McGaughey know that he’s ready for Saturday’s 138th running of the Preakness Stakes.
 
“He took a nice little hold of Jenn, was right on with his leads and moved over the track great, so I couldn’t be more pleased with what I saw,” McGaughey said.

Bayonne Takes Kattegat’s Pride Starter Handicap

 

BALTIMORE, 05-17-13---Cramer Racing LLC’s Bayonne rallied from off the pace to win the $40,000 Kattegat’s Pride Starter Handicap,  the first race of today’s Black-Eyed Susan Day program.

Ridden by Erik Ramirez, the 5-year-old daughter of Dance With Ravens was sent to post as the 8-5 favorite in the field of nine registered Maryland-bred fillies and mares. She did not disappoint. Bayonne got up in the final jumps to beat Side by Side, with Franstein finishing third.
